Money can be one reward—not the whole lesson
Build an allowance-and-chores system that fits your family.
Separate basic family contributions from optional earning jobs, or connect every approved chore to points. ChorePoints supports either approach.

There is more than one reasonable model
Some families pay a set weekly allowance when core responsibilities are met. Others keep basic chores unpaid and offer extra jobs for money. Some use points that can be exchanged for cash, privileges, or experiences. The useful question is not which model wins—it is whether the rules are understandable and consistently applied.
ChorePoints lets parents assign different values, create a cash reward if desired, and keep a visible history of approved work.
Separate contribution from earning when it helps
A practical hybrid starts with a few non-negotiable household contributions: putting away personal items, clearing a plate, or caring for shared spaces. Optional jobs—washing a car, organizing a garage shelf, or extra yard work—can carry a larger point or cash value.
This keeps belonging to the family from becoming a transaction while still teaching that additional work can create additional earning.
Make the exchange rate easy to explain
Choose a simple conversion such as 10 points equals $1, then price chores by time, difficulty, frequency, and independence. Avoid changing the value after work is complete. If the system is too generous or too slow, adjust future tasks together.
A transparent history gives parents and kids the same record when allowance day arrives.
A four-step start
Set up the smallest version that can work.
- Choose a contribution, job, or hybrid model.
- Set one easy points-to-money conversion.
- Agree on payday and approval rules.
- Review the system monthly—not in the middle of a dispute.
